Copying geometry to a template

When you copy and paste features you are prompted to select a feature class or subtype, but are not able to select a feature template. This means that the feature is pasted into the target feature class with the feature class or subtype default values, and does not use the feature templates.

The Geometry To Template tool allows you to select a feature template when pasting features. This allows the pasted feature to be populated with the values defined in the template, and reduces the number of attribution changes that will be necessary after the paste is completed.

1. Start ArcMap.
2. On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Defense Mapping.
3. On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Production Editing.
4. Click the Production Start Editing button on the Production Editing toolbar.

   Note:

   The Manage Features and Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes windows automatically appear when you start an edit session using the Production Start Editing tool.

   Tip:

   If the Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes window does not appear when you start an edit session, click the Show/Hide Attributes button on the Manage Features window.

5. Select the features you want to copy and paste.
6. Select the feature template to which you want to paste the features in the Manage Features window.

   You can only select one feature type.

7. Click the Geometry To Template button on the Defense Mapping toolbar.

The geometry is copied to the template feature class. The pasted features are the resulting selection set, not the copied features.
