Some linear events, such as pavement conditions and speed limits, are used to describe route attributes that exist continuously along the route. While every location along the route has a pavement condition, the condition may not be the same along the entire length of the route. The Modify Shared Line Event tool allows you to adjust the value in the to- or from-measure field to ensure two events are contiguous, without overlaps or gaps. The tool can also be used to extend one event along a route and automatically adjust an adjacent event to maintain the coincidence of their endpoints.
An overlap or gap occurs between two line events when the measure values of the selected ends of two events are not the same.
When this occurs, you are asked if you want to make the two event endpoints coincident. If you do not choose to make the events coincident, the tool cannot be used.
With this example, the poor pavement event is separated from the good pavement event by a small gap. Selecting the two events displays a message that notifies you that the selected to- and from-measure points are not coincident and asks if you want to make them coincident. If you choose to make the two events coincident, you can click the location along the route where you want two events to meet.
After a point is selected, the value is updated in the to-measure field for the poor pavement event, and the from-measure value is updated for the second event. The events are also redrawn to reflect the new measure values in the map.

- Select two events in the map by clicking and dragging a box around them.
A message appears asking whether or not you want to make the events coincident.
- Click Yes.
The cursor changes to a turquoise circle, and a MapTip displays its current measure value along the route.
- Drag the cursor to the new location where you want the first event to end and the second one to begin, then click the line.
The value of the to-measure field is updated for the first event, and the value of the from-measure field is updated for the second event. Both events are redrawn in the map to reflect the new values.
