Using the Zoom To Target tool

Available with 3D Analyst license.

The Zoom To Target tool allows you to directly manipulate the target location and zoom in closer to that location with a single click. This is useful to quickly navigate to a specific location in 3D. This is similar to turning to look at a person across the room and walking up to them.

By setting a new target location, you are also preparing the 3D view for other uses. For example, rotating the 3D view after using this tool will pivot around the new target point, making that location the focus of the animation.

  1. In ArcGlobe, click the Zoom To Target Zoom to Target button.

The pointer changes to indicate the Zoom To Target tool.

  2. If the Zoom To Target button is missing from your Tools toolbar, you can add it by going to the Customize menu and clicking Customize Mode. Click the Commands tab, search for the button under the Category list item Viewer, then drag the icon onto the toolbar.
  3. Click once in the 3D view, either on the surface or a 3D object.
  4. The target is updated to the new location, centering the view on it, and the observer zooms in closer.

Using the Zoom To Target tool automatically switches the navigation mode from global to surface mode.
Tip:
  • The Zoom To Target tool functionality is also exposed by pressing the CTRL key and right-clicking when using the 3D Navigate tool.
