Creating symbols with the Representation Rule Dump tool

This tool does the following:

  • Creates a new file geodatabase with three feature classes: points, lines, and polygons
  • Assigns all the representation rules associated with a defined style to those features
  • Adds the features to the current active data frame with its visibility turned off

Note:

If you need to create a lookup or symbology QA/QC plot of all the representation rules located in a style, use this tool together with the Graphic Table Element (GTE) or the Legend tool.

  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. Add the Representation Rule Dump command to a toolbar by following these steps:
    1. On the main menu, click Customize > Customize Mode.
    2. In the Customize window, click the Commands tab.
    3. In the Categories list, choose Defense Mapping.
    4. From the Commands list, drag the Representation Rule Dump button Representation Rule Dump to a toolbar.
  3. Click the Representation Rule Dump button.

The Representation Rule Dump dialog box appears.

  4. Browse to select the style file you want to associate.
  5. Browse to the folder where the geodatabase will be stored.
  6. Type a name in the Output Geodatabase Name field.
  7. Click OK.

To convert representation rule symbols to graphics for use in the ArcMap layout, specifically in map legends, see Creating graphics with a graphic table element from a rule dump.
