Connecting ArcMap to ArcGIS Online network analysis services

  • Creating a connection

One way to connect to the ArcGIS Online network analysis services is through ArcGIS for Desktop.

Note:

If you are developing an application and want to learn how to connect to and consume the network analysis services using a client other than ArcMap, you can start with the ArcGIS REST API help system.

Legacy:

Connecting requires one of the following versions of ArcGIS for Desktop:

  • 10.2 and all subsequent releases
  • 10.1 Service Pack 1 and all subsequent service packs
  • 10.0 Service Pack 5

If you want to connect to ArcGIS Online network analysis services using a version of ArcGIS for Desktop prior to 10.2, the steps to connect are different than the ones listed below. Refer to the 10.1 web help in that case.

Creating a connection

  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. Click the Catalog button Catalog on the Standard toolbar to open the Catalog window.
  3. In the Catalog window, right-click Ready-To-Use Services and click Sign In if you are not already signed in.
  4. Type your Esri account user name in the User Name text box.

The Esri account must be part of an ArcGIS Online for organizations account.

You can purchase an organizational subscription or request a free trial if you don't have a subscription already.

  5. Type your password for the account in the Password text box.
  6. Click Finish.

Several server connections appear in the Catalog window and are ready for use. The connection to the World Route Service isn't visible here, but you can see it in the Find Route dialog box.
