Creating a network analysis layer in ArcMap

Available with Network Analyst license.

  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. Network analyses are always performed on network datasets. Consequently, a network analysis layer must be bound to a network dataset.

A network dataset needs to be added to ArcMap before a network analysis layer can be created. When an analysis layer is created, the ArcGIS Network Analyst extension automatically binds it to the active network dataset.

    Note:

The active network dataset is displayed in ArcMap on the Network Dataset drop-down list, which is on the Network Analyst toolbar.

  3. Add a network dataset to ArcMap if you don't already have a network dataset layer available in Table Of Contents.

Learn more about adding network dataset layers to ArcMap

    1. If you have more than one network dataset in ArcMap, click the Network Dataset drop-down list on the Network Analyst toolbar and choose the network dataset you want to perform the analysis on.
  4. On the Network Analyst toolbar, click Network Analyst and choose a network analysis layer to create.

    The Network Analyst toolbar

    • New Route
    • New Service Area
    • New Closest Facility
    • New OD Cost Matrix
    • New Vehicle Routing Problem
    • New Location-Allocation

The new network analysis layer appears in the Network Analyst window and is bound to the active network dataset. The network analysis layer also appears in the table of contents as a composite layer.
