Creating a turn feature class in ArcMap

Available with Network Analyst license.

If you do not have any existing turn data from other Esri software products to migrate for use in a network dataset, you might want to do one of the following:

• Create a new turn feature class in a geodatabase and add it to a network dataset.
• Create a new turn feature class in a shapefile workspace and create a shapefile network dataset.

Once the data participates in the network dataset, you can create turn features in it using editing tools in ArcMap.

You can create a turn feature class from the context menu in ArcCatalog, the context menu in the Catalog window of ArcMap, or a geoprocessing tool. The procedures are similar to creating any other feature class in a geodatabase.

These steps show how to create a turn feature class using a context menu in ArcMap.

1. In the Catalog window of ArcMap, right-click the target geodatabase feature dataset, point to New, then click Feature Class.
   • If you are creating a turn feature in a shapefile workspace, right-click the shapefile workspace, point to New, then click Turn Feature Class. This opens the Create Turn Feature Class dialog box. You should skip the rest of the steps in this document and instead read Creating a turn feature class with a tool

2. Type the name for the new turn feature class.
3. In the Type frame, chooseTurn Features from the drop-down list.
4. Click the drop-down arrow to choose the network dataset to which the turn feature class will belong. If you haven't created a network dataset in the workspace yet, you can leave this blank.
5. Click the up or down arrow buttons to specify the maximum number of edges per turn.

   This number can range from 2 to 30. The default is 5.

6. If you are using 3D data, check Coordinates include Z values.
7. Click Next.

   If your geodatabase is not a workgroup or enterprise geodatabase, skip to step 8.

   If you want to create the table using a custom storage keyword, click Use configuration keyword, then type the keyword you want to use.

8. Click Next.
9. Optionally, specify additional fields to be added to the turn feature class. For example, a turn impedance field to specify how long it takes to make the turn or a field for a turn restriction to specify that the turn is prohibited.
10. Click Finish.

    The New Feature Class dialog box closes and the turn feature class is created. (You might need to refresh the feature dataset in the Catalog window to see it.)
