How to generate the text on hatches using a script

  1. In ArcMap, right-click the layer in the table of contents that you want to hatch and click Properties.
  2. Click the Hatches tab.
  3. If necessary, follow steps 3 through 15 for hatching features in a layer.
  4. Click the hatch definition of your choice.
  5. Make sure the Label these hatches check box is checked.
  6. Click Label Settings.
  7. Click Build a text expression.
  8. Click Expression.
  9. Check Advanced.
  10. Type a VBScript or JavaScript expression. Find an example VBScript in About manipulating the text on hatches.
  11. ArcMap automatically creates a FindLabel function in your code. FindLabel should evaluate to a string.
