Setting the display expression for a field

Setting a display expression on a table or layer is useful when inspecting or editing features of the source data. The value from the display expression is used to identify a feature when using the Identify window or while editing with the Attributes window. You can use a display expression to combine field values into a more informative string for identifying features.

  1. If the field is in a layer's attribute table, right-click the layer in the table of contents and click Properties.
  2. If the field is in a table without features, click the List by Source button in the table of contents, right-click the layer in the table, then click Properties.
  3. Click the Display tab.
  4. Under Display Expression, click the Field arrow and click a field.
  5. Click Expression if you want to build a display expression.
  6. Click OK on all dialog boxes.
