Setting stacking limits

  1. Ensure that you have the Maplex Label Engine enabled and that you have enabled label stacking.
  2. Click the Label Manager button Label Manager on the Labeling toolbar.
  3. Check the check box next to the layer you want to label.
  4. Choose a label class under the layer.
  5. Click the Properties button.
  6. Click the Fitting Strategy tab.
  7. Check the Stack label check box.
  8. Click Options.
  9. Enter a Maximum number of lines value.
  10. Maximum number of lines specifies the maximum number of lines, from 1 to 50, into which a label can be split.

  11. Enter a Minimum number of characters per line value.
  12. Minimum number of characters per line specifies the minimum number of characters, from 1 to 8, that must be in the shortest part of a stacked label.

  13. Enter a Maximum number of characters per line value.
  14. Maximum number of characters per line specifies the maximum number of characters, from 2 to 80, that can be on a given line of a label.

  15. Click OK to close all dialog boxes.
Tip:
You can also open the Placement Properties dialog box by clicking the Placement Properties button on the Labels tab of the Layer Properties dialog box for the layer that you want to label.
