Enabling the linear referencing capability

  • Creating the map document
  • Publishing a linear referencing-capable map service
  • ArcGIS for Server cluster environment
  • Using the service

Creating the map document

Before publishing a linear referencing service, you must use ArcMap to create a map document that contains at least one LRS Network or an event layer.

You should follow the steps in Make your data accessible to ArcGIS for Server.

Publishing a linear referencing-capable map service

After you create and save your map document with symbology using ArcMap, you can create the map service with linear referencing capability by following the steps in How to publish a service from ArcMap.

When publishing the resource, keep the following in mind:

  • When specifying capabilities, make sure the Linear Referencing check box is checked.
Publish to ArcGIS Server dialog box with Linear Referencing check box checked

ArcGIS for Server cluster environment

Your ArcGIS for Server environment can consist of one or more servers with access to the same data and configuration. Additionally, these machines can be further organized into groups known as clusters.

Note:

All machines that participate in a site serving map services with linear referencing capability should have Esri Roads and Highways for Server installed. However, if you have a cluster that is dedicated to run map services without the linear referencing capability, the Roads and Highways for Server extension license is not required.

Using the service

A map service with linear referencing capability can be used to build web-based and connected mobile linear referencing applications. In addition, Roadway Characteristics Editor (RCE) consumes your data from this type of map service. For more details, follow the steps in Authoring a web map for Roadway Characteristics Editor (RCE) in the Roadway Characteristics Editor (RCE) web application guide.
