Defining a layer as a floating layer in ArcGlobe

Available with 3D Analyst license.

Redefining a layer category can be set two ways. You can either changing the role of an existing layer in the table of content, or you can add a new layer directly into the appropriate category.

If you already know you want to add data as a floating layer independant of the globe surface, add it directly by simply right-clicking Globe layers, pointing to Add Data, then clicking Add Floating Data. Browse to your data and it will appear in the Floating layers list in the table of contents.

If you want to update the role of an existing layer, do the following:

1. Right-click the layer you want to reclassify in the table of contents.
2. Point to Redefine layer, and click Redefine Layer as Floating.

   The layer is now floating.

   

Tip:

• An example of a surface that is independent of the globe surface is an analytic surface, such as a raster showing ozone concentrations. When you define an elevation layer, it always becomes part of the globe surface. If you want to float a layer on a surface independent of the globe surface, add or redefine the layer as a floating layer and use the Elevation tab settings on the Layer Properties dialog box to browse to the surface you want to use as a source of base heights.
