Extruding features by a constant value

Available with 3D Analyst license.

Extrusion is supported for points, lines and polygons. You can extrude these geometry types using a the Layer Properties dialog box and apply a constant value extrusion height. The result easily creates 3D objects from 2D features.

  1. Right-click the layer in the table of contents and click Properties.
  2. Click the Extrusion tab.
  3. Check the box to extrude the features in the layer.
  4. Type a constant value in the Extrusion value text box (for example, type "100").
  5. Click the drop-down arrow to specify the extrusion type.
  6. The graphic on the dialog box reflects the extrusion method you choose and how it is applied.

  7. Click OK.
  8. The features are extruded in 3D. Shown below is an image of the Extrusion tab in ArcScene and a sample of the layer property settings.
Extrude features in a layer using the Extrusion tab in the ArcScene Layer Properties dialog box.
Tip:
  • When extrusion is disabled for a layer, the default settings are reapplied. The settings used for the layer before its extrusion are not stored with the layer, and you may notice layers not reverting to their previous settings when disabling extrusion. For example, an extruded floating polygon layer becomes a rasterized draped layer.
  • You can also apply extrusion in ArcCatalog with the same steps above. In ArcGlobe, use the Globe Extrusion tab.
