Load control points

Available with Standard or Advanced license.

Control points are loaded into a parcel fabric from a feature class, a table, or a comma-delimited (.csv) text file. When loading coordinates for control points from a table or .csv file, coordinates must be stored in fields named X, Y, and Z (optional) and must be of type double.

If you will be using control points in a parcel fabric adjustment, it is recommended that you populate the Z attribute field. The Z attribute is used to handle ground-to-grid corrections in the adjustment. The Z value does not need to be accurate, an estimated value will suffice.

When loading control points into a parcel fabric, you can choose to merge the control points with any existing control points that lie within a specified tolerance. An example of when you would do this is when an existing control point has been updated with new coordinates. You would load the new control point, merge it with the existing control point, and overwrite the coordinates of the existing control point. Make sure you keep your control point names unique if you want them to receive updated coordinates from updated control points.

When merging new control points with existing control points, you have the following options:

• Change or keep the control point names.
• Define how coordinates are managed; for example, update the coordinates or keep existing coordinates.
• Define how attributes are managed; for example, update existing attribute values.

Note:

Make sure you keep your control point names unique if you want them to receive updated coordinates from updated control points.

Tip:

If you are loading control points with x,y values in the X and Y fields, consider using the Make XY Event layer geoprocessing tool to confirm that the x,y attributes are correctly located.

To load control points to a parcel fabric, follow these steps:

1. In the Catalog window, right-click the parcel fabric and point to Import > Control Points to open the Import Control Points wizard.
2. Click the browse button and browse to the control point source data on the Select a dataset dialog box.
3. Check the Use shape field for coordinates box if you are migrating a feature class of control points with no x,y,z attributes.
4. Click Next.
5. Enter a tolerance for Match point to control tolerance.

   Control points are linked to parcel fabric points if they lie within the specified tolerance.

6. Click the Define settings for merging imported control points with existing control points check box if you are merging new control points with existing control points in the parcel fabric.
7. Click the Only apply when the source and target point have the same name check box to only merge control points with the same name.
8. Enter a tolerance for Close control tolerance.

   Control points are merged if they lie within the specified tolerance.

9. Choose how to handle the newly merged control point name by clicking the Name drop-down list and selecting an option.
10. Choose how to handle the newly merged control point coordinates by clicking the Coordinates drop-down list and selecting an option.
11. Choose how to handle new attribute values by clicking the Other attributes drop-down list and selecting an option.
12. Click Next to view a summary of your import settings.
13. Click the Log import results to a file check box if you want to save a log of your data migration results. Click the browse button to browse to the location where you want to save your log file.
14. Click Finish to load the control points.
