An overview of the Symbology toolset

The Symbology toolset contains tools to help manage visualization specifications. Visual specifications help you specify symbology by defining rules that control representations and labels. Visual specifications enhance productivity by allowing you to batch apply representations and label expressions to feature layers.

Tools in the Symbology toolset

Tool	Description
Add Representation Fields	Production Mapping configuration tool that applies representation symbology to the input features. This tool applies symbology to many layers and links feature attributes to representation rules and label expressions.
Calculate Representation Fields	Production Mapping configuration tool that calculates representation symbology to the input features. This tool calculates symbology for many layers and links feature attributes to representation rules and label expressions.
Calculate Visual Specifications	A visual specification defines how to apply representations and labels to features. This tool has two functions: apply representations to features and calculate fields used in label expressions.
Drop Visual Specifications	Drops visual specifications from a feature layer or feature class. This tool removes fields that are associated with visual specifications. These fields store a specification's representation rule ID or label values.
Select Features By Specifications Difference	Selects features from feature classes or feature layers with representation rule IDs or calculated field values that do not match a selected visual specification.
Select Features By Symbol Color	Provides the ability to select a set of features based on their symbol color. This allows features with specific colors to be used as input into additional geoprocessing tools, such as the Intersecting Layers Masks tool.
