Creating Zones of Confidence diagrams

The S-4 chart specification of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) defines Zones of Confidence (ZOC) diagrams as a type of source diagrams that provide more qualitative assessment of the source information. Like a source diagram, ZOC diagrams enable mariners to assess the quality of the hydrographic data from which the chart was compiled. The Create ZOC Diagram tool helps automate the creation of ZOC diagrams by automating the following:

  • Inserts LNDARE and M_QUAL features into the data frame
  • Symbolizes LNDARE and M_QUAL features
  • Deconflicts M_QUAL boundaries to remove overlapping symbols
  • Creates the appropriate grid based on the scale of the ZOC diagram
  • Labels M_QUAL areas with the appropriate zone of confidence assessment value from CATZOC
  • Converts category zone of confidence labels to annotation features
  • Sets the reference scale of the data frame to match the ZOC diagram scale
  • Sets the projection of the data frame
  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. Click the ArcToolbox button ArcToolbox on the Standard toolbar.
  3. Expand Nautical Tools and double-click the Create ZOC Diagram tool.
  4. Choose a single polygon for the Area Of Interest parameter that represents the extent of the ZOC diagram.
  5. Insert a scale for the diagram in the ZOC Diagram Scale parameter.

    Note:

A ZOC diagram scale is typically one-tenth the scale of the chart. If the chart is 1:10,000 the parameter value for the ZOC Diagram Scale would be 1:100,000.

  6. For the Chart Database parameter, choose the geodatabase on which you want to run the process.
  7. Choose to run the process on the current map document or a template map document.
    • If you choose PATH_TO_MXD, browse to the location of the map document to populate the ArcMap document property.
    • If you choose CURRENT_MXD, the map document must first be saved.
  8. Choose the data frame on which to to run the process by selecting it from the Data Frame drop-down menu.

If no data frame is available for the ZOC diagram, you may first insert an empty one.

  9. Click OK.

You have now created a Zones of Confidence diagram.
