Paper charting production process

  • Paper chart products
  • Paper charting process

The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) provides standards for paper charting. These standards are provided as guidelines that understand that each chart-producing agency may employ its unique charting standards. The ArcGIS for Maritime: Charting provides you with the ability to customize the tools and workflows to meet your specific requirements.

Paper chart products

Creating paper charts in Maritime Charting involves an initial creation and finishing process. Each paper chart product is stored in the product library. Over time, there can be many charts stored and managed by the product library. These charts can be individually checked out of the product library and maintained as needed after the initial chart creation and finishing process is complete.

Paper charting process

Initial paper chart creation process

The initial chart product creation process involves creating a chart in the product library using the New Nautical Product wizard. The New Nautical Product wizard creates the chart databases. The New Nautical Product wizard generates one database for each of the data frames in the map document. In Maritime Charting, data frames are synonymous with chart kapps, plans, or panels. The map document is synonymous with the overall chart, including all of the data frames and any other layout information, such as title blocks, scale bars, and explanatory notes.

Initial chart finishing process and exports

Once the chart databases are created, the paper chart finishing steps can be performed on each data frame and the map document. The chart finishing steps involve running the Chart Automation tool, creating cartographic features, cartographic finishing, and setting up the page layout. Once the finishing steps are complete, the chart can be used to produce various raster or vector outputs for publication and distribution.

Updates and maintenance

The paper chart can also be maintained with regular updates from the NIS database through the update edition process.

Advanced finishing process

Advanced processes involve managing BSB, grids, creating a chartlet, converting raster logos to graphics, and working with other symbols.
