Editing data using unit conversion

If you need to convert units, for example, between English and metric, ArcGIS for Maritime: Charting provides a mechanism for configuring unit conversion and rounding rules, applying those rules for importing into the geodatabase, exporting to S-57 format, then editing and labeling in ArcGIS for Desktop.

You can configure your own unit conversion and rounding rules using the product library workspace XML file that is included in Maritime Charting.

Learn more about the product library.

  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Production Editing.
  3. Click the Production Start Editing button Production Start Editing on the Production Editing toolbar.

    Note:

The Manage Features and Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes windows automatically appear when you start an edit session using the Production Start Editing tool.

    Tip:

If the Create Attributes, Update Attributes, or Metadata Attributes window does not appear when you start an edit session, click the Show/Hide Attributes button Show/Hide Attributes on the Manage Features window.

  4. On the main menu, click Customize > Toolbars > Nautical Unit Selection.
  5. Click the HUNI drop-down arrow and choose the height unit.

By default, this is set to Meters.

  6. Click the DUNI drop-down arrow and choose the depth unit.

By default, this is set to Meters.

  7. Click the PUNI drop-down arrow and choose the positional unit.

By default, this is set to Meters.

  8. Select a feature.
  9. Click the Update tab.
  10. Click the Update Attributes tab.
  11. Click the cell next to the HUNI field and type the source value.
  12. Click the cell next to the DUNI field and type the source value.
  13. Click the cell next to the PUNI field and type the source value.
  14. Click Apply.

The destination fields are automatically recalculated along with the unit conversion (_UC) and rounding rule (_RR) fields, based on the HUNI, DUNI, and PUNI settings on the Nautical Unit Selection toolbar.

    Note:

Rounding rules are not applied to values when editing data.
