    Updating nautical symbology

This ArcGIS 10.3 documentation has been archived and is no longer updated. Content and links may be outdated. See the latest documentation.

The Update tool adds the required fields (RuleID, Override, and Text string) to the feature classes selected, and if they do not exist, it updates the values accordingly. The ArcGIS for Maritime: Charting NIS, chart, and ENC schemas are preconfigured with the INT1 specification. Since the geodatabases are preconfigured, using the Update tool is not necessary. When creating national symbology, editing the representation rule, or adding a representation rule on a specific layer, it will require the use of the Update tool on the geodatabase. In an enterprise environment, where some users are restricted from making schema changes, it is recommended that an administrator run this tool with the appropriate symbology first.

    Note:

In a versioned environment, the Update tool can only be run on the default version of a geodatabase.

    1. Start ArcMap.
    2. Open the product map document if necessary.
    3. In the Table Of Contents window, click the List By Source button List By Source.
    4. In the Table Of Contents window, select the layers or feature dataset to be updated.
    5. If necessary, add the Update command by doing the following:
      1. On the main menu, click Customize > Customize Mode.

        The Customize dialog box appears.

      2. Click the Commands tab.
      3. Choose Nautical Symbology in the Categories list.
      4. Drag the Update command to a toolbar.
      5. Click Close.
    6. Click the Update button.

The Update Specifications dialog box appears.

    7. Check the box for the symbology you want to apply.
    8. Click OK.

This process may take several minutes.
