An overview of the Coverage toolbox

The Coverage toolbox provides a powerful set of tools to perform various geoprocessing operations that use coverages. A coverage is a data model used to store geographic features that has been superseded with the development and data model structure of the geodatabase.

For those people who may be familiar with versions of Esri's ARC/INFO and ArcInfo Workstation software, the Coverage toolbox contains tools that replicate ARC commands and functionality.

Note:

Coverages cannot be stored using spaces in their names.

If you do not have ArcInfo Workstation installed, the Coverage toolbox will not appear in the list of available toolboxes.

For more information about coverages, see:

ToolsetsDescription
Analysis

Contains the toolsets used to process or manipulate your coverages to solve spatial or statistical problems. Some of the most commonly used geoprocessing tools, such as clip, buffer, and intersect, are part of this toolset. Some of these tools are used in analysis based on an attribute value within a dataset, interacting datasets, or both.

Conversion

Geographic data is the cornerstone of a geographic information system (GIS), but this data can exist in an extensive array of different data types. This toolset contains tools to translate data to and from specific government formats, as well as formats used to transfer data from various sources.

An overview of the Data Management toolset

Provides a collection of toolsets that are used to develop, manage, and maintain the features within coverages and their attribute tables. These tools allow you to add fields (items) to tables, join tables, simplify lines, and build topology. There are also tools to create new coverages, manage coverage projections, append coverages, or convert features within a coverage from one feature class to another.
