Creating an LRS Derived Network

Available with Location Referencing license.

A Derived Network is a subtype of a network that can be generated from an Engineering Stationing Network. In a Derived Network, routes that belong to the same line are merged together to create one single route with a source measure of zero. Line ID and Line Name fields from an Engineering Stationing Network are then inherited as the Route ID and Route Name for the Derived Network. The network feature class can be modeled in advance or created when you create your LRS Derived Network. The steps to create your first network using both workflows are listed below.

Creating an LRS Derived Network with the create feature class option

If your network feature class has not been created in advance, the Create new LRS Network wizard can create it while simultaneously registering the network with the LRS. Follow the steps below to create the derived network feature class while registering it with the LRS.

  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. Browse to the target geodatabase in the Catalog window.
  3. Right-click the LRS in the target geodatabase and click New > LRS Network.

    If you clicked Yes on the Do you wish to create a new Network? dialog box after creating an LRS, the Create new LRS Network wizard appears.

  4. Choose the Create a new feature class option.

    Note:

    If the network feature class is already present in the geodatabase with the LRS, follow the steps in the Create an LRS Derived Network using an existing feature class section.

  5. Give the new network a name by typing a name in the Feature class name text box and an alias by typing an alias in the Feature class alias text box.
  6. Click the Unit of measure drop-down arrow and choose the unit of measure for the network.

    You can choose a different unit of measure for your network than your source polyline route feature class unit of measure. During the update calibration points step of the creation process, you can specify the unit of measure for the source polyline route feature class, and the measures will automatically be converted.

  7. Click the Tolerance and Resolution button to view the tolerance properties.

    Note:

    These properties are read-only as they are inherited from the centerline feature class. Keeping the tolerance settings the same for the centerline feature class and network feature class ensures routes and measures stay in alignment in ArcGIS Pipeline Referencing.

  8. Click Close.

    The General Network Properties appear.

  9. Check the Derive from a network with lines check box.

    Note:

    The Network with lines drop-down menu will only show the Engineering Stationing type of network.

  10. Click Next.

  11. Optionally confirm the populated field name for the fields in the network feature class.

    Note:

    Default names are provided for the fields, but they can be changed by clicking the cell and typing the new field name.

  12. Click Next.

    The LRS Network is created.

  13. Click Finish to exit the wizard.

Creating an LRS Derived Network using an existing feature class

The network feature class can be created before registering the network with the LRS. In Pipeline Referencing, the spatial reference, tolerance, and resolution settings for the network feature class must align with those of the centerline feature class. The m tolerance and resolution of the network feature class will be determined based on the spatial reference of the centerline feature class, the x,y tolerance and resolution of the centerline feature class, and the desired LRM units of measure. For more information on determining the tolerance and resolution for the network feature class, see LRS data model. Once the spatial reference, tolerance, and resolution are verified to be in alignment with the centerline feature class, follow the steps below to register the LRS Derived Network.

  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. Browse to the target geodatabase in the Catalog window.
  3. Right-click the LRS in the target geodatabase and click New > LRS Network.

    If you clicked Yes on the Do you wish to create a new Network? dialog box after creating an LRS, the Create new LRS Network wizard appears.

  4. Choose the Use an existing feature class option.

    Note:

    If the network feature class has not been created, follow the steps in the previous section with the Create a new feature class option.

  5. Check the Derive from a network with lines check box.

    Note:

    The Network with lines drop-down menu will only show the Engineering Stationing type of network.

  6. Click Next.

    The field names are read-only since they are inherited from an existing feature class.

  7. Click Next.

    The LRS Network is created.
