Finding an address

Address finding services provide partial address support with address data sources. This means that if you do not provide the complete address, you can still get a list of candidates based on the information you have entered. For example, if you only enter a city name, the result list contains cities whose names match the name you entered. Address finding services can perform four levels of geocoding, with levels 3 and 4 representing partial address geocoding.

  • Level 1: House-level geocoding returns the x,y coordinates of a complete address, such as 380 New York St, Redlands, CA 92373.
  • Level 2: Intersection geocoding returns the x,y of the intersection of two cross streets, such as New York St AT Pine Ave, Redlands, CA 92373.
  • Level 3: Street-level geocoding returns the centroids of each street segment and area, such as 100–200 New York St, 92373 or New York St, 92373.
  • Level 4: Place-level geocoding returns the centroid of the place, such as Redlands, CA.

European geocoding doesn't use the Administrative field but does require the Country field.

Street name and Administrative, Administrative alone, or street alone will not return a result.

Some services do not support level 3 geocoding.

  1. On the Data toolbar, click the Find button Find.
  2. Click the Addresses tab.
  3. Choose a service from the address locator drop-down list.
  4. Once a locator has been selected, options for defining the address will be displayed. Fill out the address information. Some services only support one country, and Administrative refers to state or province.
  5. Click Find.
  6. Right-click a found address to flash, zoom to, or pan to the place.
