Setting up the ArcMap DNC production environment

ArcGIS Maritimeprovides tools that assist you in bringing in already-existing data, along with tools that streamline the feature editing and attributing process. All essential mapping information is stored in a geodatabase.

  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. On the main menu, click Customize > Extensions and verify that all applicable extensions are checked.

You need Production Mapping and ArcGIS Maritime.

  3. Click Customize > Customize Mode and add the following toolbars from the Customize dialog box.
    • Nautical DNC
    • Production Editing
    • Production Editing Advanced
    • Production Symbology
    • Production TOC Manager
    • Topology
  4. Use the Individual Library Instruction (ILI) to identify the type of chart to create:
    • Approach—DNCA
    • Coastal—DNCC
    • General—DNCG
    • Harbor—DNCH
  5. Copy the template geodatabase (GDB) from one of the following locations to your chart data storage location.

    • For 32-bit Windows operating systems—<Installation location>\Program Files\ArcGIS\MaritimeCharting\Desktop<version>\Dnc\Schemas\Built
    • For 64-bit Windows operating systems—<Installation location>\Program Files(x86)\ArcGIS\MaritimeCharting\Desktop<version>\Dnc\Schemas\Built

  6. Rename the geodatabase something meaningful such as the library or chart name.
  7. Click the Add Data button Add Data.

The Add Data dialog box opens.

  8. Browse to the DNC feature dataset in the geodatabase you copied in step 5 and click Add.

    Note:

Load all feature classes if you are starting a new production chart. For a quality control or maintenance chart, you don't need to load all the feature classes. To remove unpopulated feature classes, click the Remove Empty Layers button Remove Empty Feature Layers on the Production TOC Manager toolbar.

  9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 to add your georeferenced image.
  10. Save your map document (.mxd).

    Tip:

Save frequently while editing and adding data. Save your .mxd after saving data edits or after changing symbology or label definitions.
