Exercise 4: Adding a step to configure feature layers

Goal:
Learn how to configure a step to set layer visibility and selectability.

In this exercise, you are going to configure a step to set layer visibility and selectability. At the completion of this exercise, your Task Assistant window will appear as follows:

Note:

Highlight the last item on the list in the Task Assistant window to make sure the next step you create is added below the previous steps.

  1. Click the New Step button New Step on the Task Assistant window.

    A new step appears in the Task Assistant window.

  2. Click to highlight New Step.
  3. Click the Designer tab.

  4. Click the cell next to Description and type Sets Buildings visible and selectable. Sets Streets not selectable.
  5. Click the cell next to Name, double-click the existing text, then type Configure Layers.
  6. Click the cell next to Layers and click the ellipsis (...) that appears.

  7. In the Layer Members list, check the Streets layer check box.
  8. In the Layer Properties area, click the cell next to Selectable.
  9. Click the drop-down arrow that appears and choose Off.
  10. In the Layer Members list, check the Buildings layer check box.

  11. In the Layer Properties area, click the cell next to All TOC.
  12. Click the drop-down arrow that appears and choose On.
  13. Click OK.
  14. Perform the following steps to save the task assistant workflow to a file:
    1. Right-click in the Task Assistant window and click Save Workflow As.
    2. Browse to the file location in which you want to save the task assistant workflow.
    3. Type a name for the task assistant workflow in the File name text box.
    4. Click OK.

      The Workflow Saved message appears and confirms the saved file location.

    5. Click OK.

    Note:

    You will explore the process of saving the task assistant workflow to a file in greater detail in Exercise 9: Saving and associating workflows.

In this exercise, you configured a step to set layer visibility and selectability. To proceed to the next exercise, click Exercise 5: Adding steps for edit session tools.
