Setting up Task Assistant Manager properties

Task Assistant Manager has properties that allow you to set preferences for working with a workflow . You can choose whether or not steps should be executed when clicked, whether ToolTips are displayed when the mouse pointer is hovered over a step, and whether all workflows are going to close when you close an MXD.

Additionally, you can also refresh the configuration settings for the default Task Assistant Manager configuration file. This includes information such as the commands, tools, and geoprocessing tools and scripts that are available; feature templates and layers in the map; and snapping and construction tools that are available. You can restrict what is updated when the configuration file is refreshed by indicating that items in the current map will be appended to the configuration file or that only the layer and geoprocessing tool information should be updated

The Properties tab on the Task Assistant window contains the following options:

  • Execute Step(s)—When this check box is checked, steps execute when clicked in the Task Assistant window. This property is most useful when checked for testing and verification; it is unchecked during design.
    Tip:

You can also click the Execute Steps Is On button Execute Steps Is On at the bottom of the Task Assistant window.

    Note:

This is disabled and cannot be changed if you are a Task Assistant user.

  • Show Tooltips—When this check box is checked, the description is displayed in a pop-up window when you hover over a step.
  • Close Workflow(s) on MXD Close—When this check box is checked, the current workflow in the Task Assistant window closes when the MXD is closed. In a new ArcMap session, the Task Assistant window is empty.
  • Refresh Config—Refreshes the default configuration file. The configuration file contains ArcGIS commands, geoprocessing tools, feature templates, and layer information that are loaded in the current MXD. The Append MXD Items and Refresh MXD Items Only options affect what is updated when you click Refresh Config.
  • Append MXD Items—This check box allows you to specify how the map configuration is reset when the map document is changed. When this check box is checked, the map configuration information on the Designer tab is not cleared when a new document is opened; instead, the new map configuration information is appended to the existing map configuration information.
  • Refresh MXD Items Only—If this check box is checked when Refresh Config is clicked, only the MXD configuration information (layer information and geoprocessing tools) is refreshed. Configuration items, such as commands, are not refreshed.
  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. If necessary, click the Task Assistant button Task Assistant on the Task Manager toolbar to display the Task Assistant window.
  3. Click the Properties tab.

    Properties tab

  4. If necessary, check the Execute Step(s) check box if you want the step to execute when clicked in the Task Assistant window.
  5. If necessary, check the Show Tooltips check box if you want the step description to appear in a pop-up window when you hover over a step.
  6. If necessary, check the Close Workflow(s) on MXD Close if you want all the workflows to close when you close ArcMap or the current MXD.
  7. Check the Append MXD Items check box if you want to specify that the configuration is reset when the map document is changed.
  8. Check the Refresh MXD Items Only check box to specify that only the MXD information (layer information and geoprocessing tools) is refreshed.

    Note:

Configuration items, such as commands, would not be refreshed in this case.

  9. Click Refresh Config to refresh the configuration file.
