Merging parcels

Available with Standard or Advanced license.

  • Merging parcels in the Local Government Information Model

New parcels can be created by merging existing parcels in the parcel fabric. Adjacent parcels can be merged to create a single parcel, and disjoint parcels can be merged to create multipart parcels. Parcels being merged can be saved as historic parcels, kept current, or deleted. To merge parcels in the parcel fabric, select the parcels you want to merge, right-click, and click Merge.

On the Merge dialog box, choose the first option (Preserve attributes from) to merge the selected parcels into a new parcel and flag the selected (parent) parcels as historic. Check Delete parent parcels if you do not want to save the selected, parent parcels as historic. Choose the second option (Change to new template) to merge the selected parcels into a new parcel using a different feature template. The selected parent parcels are kept current. For example, merge all the tax parcels to create a new subdivision parcel (but keep the selected tax parcels current).

If no parcel name is specified, a default parcel name is assigned to the new parcel.

If the first option is used and the parent parcels are saved as historic, the parent parcels will still be visible if you've chosen to display all parcels in the parcel fabric. To display only current, non historic parcels in your parcel fabric, right-click the parcel fabric layer, click Properties, and choose Show a view of the fabric parcels on the History tab on the Layer Properties dialog box.

To merge parcels in the parcel fabric, follow these steps:
  1. In an edit session in ArcMap, click the Select Parcel Features tool Select Parcel Features on the Parcel Editor toolbar, select the parcels you want to merge, right-click, and click Merge.
  2. You can merge two or more adjacent parcels. If selected parcels are not adjacent, multipart parcels are created.
  3. On the Merge dialog box, type a parcel name in the Parcel name text box.
  4. If you leave the parcel name blank, a default parcel name of NewParcelxx is used.
  5. Choose the merge option to use when creating the new parcel.
  6. Click OK to create the new parcel.

Merging parcels in the Local Government Information Model

When the parcel fabric is enabled with the Local Government Information Model, historic parcels are displayed in the separate Historic Parcels layer and symbolized by Reason Parcel Retired. Parcel lines are displayed by category.

To view the original parent parcels after merging them, turn on the Historic Parcels layer. The Reason Parcel Retired value can be set by opening the Attributes window of the selected historic parcel.
