Access to an enterprise geodatabase is controlled through user accounts. Privileges are granted to user accounts based on the work users need to do in the geodatabase. Once accounts exist and privileges have been granted, users can connect to the geodatabase from client applications and begin working with the geodatabase.
Create user accounts
The database administrator creates accounts in the database management system that people will use to log in to the geodatabase from client applications.
Grant privileges
The database administrator grants privileges on the database, such as the ability to connect or create tables. Users who are able to create datasets in the geodatabase can grant privileges on the datasets to other users, thereby controlling who can view or edit the datasets.
Connect
The geodatabase administrator is responsible for managing geodatabase connections. He or she needs to do the following:
- Provide users with the information needed to connect to the geodatabase, or create connection files and send them to users.
- Monitor geodatabase connections and locks.
- Prior to performing maintenance tasks, the geodatabase administrator may need to prevent new connections to the geodatabase or remove existing connections.
