Adding geometric network features

Available with Standard or Advanced license.

License:

While network features can be both created and edited in ArcGIS Desktop Advanced and Desktop Standard, they are read-only in Desktop Basic.

Adding features to a network is the same as adding features to any dataset. However, when features are added to a network, they connect topologically to other features in the network. These connections are automatically maintained inside the geodatabase and are based on geometric coincidence. For example, a junction must be coincident with an edge endpoint to be connected. To ensure geometric coincidence, use snapping when editing network features.

  1. Click the Editor menu on the Editor toolbar and click Start Editing.
  2. Click Customize > Toolbars > Snapping.
  3. Set the appropriate snapping properties on the Snapping toolbar.
  4. In the Create Features window, click the type of edge feature you want to create, and click the Line construction tool.
  5. In the Create Features window, click the type of edge feature you want to create and click the appropriate construction tool.
  6. Point to a position on the feature where the new feature is to connect.

A target appears to show that snapping is on.

  7. Click to create the first vertex of the new feature.
  8. Create the remaining vertices of the sketch and double-click to finish.
  9. Click the Editor menu on the Editor toolbar and click Stop Editing.
  10. Click Yes to save your changes.
