An overview of displaying and querying route events

Displaying and querying route events is a key component of linear referencing. The way to display your events is through a process called dynamic segmentation (DynSeg). DynSeg was developed to meet the need to visually represent linearly referenced features on a map. For example, a highway authority might want to display events associated with its street network, such as pavement quality and accident locations.

The DynSeg process computes the map location (shape) of events stored in event tables along their route reference. The result is a dynamic feature class known as a route event source. It is displayed as a feature layer in ArcMap, and like other feature layers, it can be used for display, query, and analysis.

Route events can be added to ArcMap using the Make Route Event Layer geoprocessing tool or by accessing the Display Route Events command from the event tables context menu in ArcMap.
