An overview of displaying and querying route feature classes

Route feature classes, similar to other geographic data, are displayed as a layer in ArcMap. Along with the standard tools for display, ArcMap also provides tools specifically designed for symbolizing and labeling routes.

A route's measures can be displayed using hatching, which places hatch marks or symbols at regular, user-defined intervals along the route. You might also want to display measure anomalies along your routes. Route measure anomalies are portions of routes where the measures do not conform to the standards your application expects.

In addition to display tools, ArcMap also provides ways to query your route feature class. With these additional tools, you can do the following:

  • Find route and measure information by pointing at your map.
  • Find route locations on a map by providing route and measure information.
