Although it is not required, it is advantageous to set the route identifier field for a route feature class displayed in ArcMap. The route identifier uniquely identifies each route within a feature class. Setting the route identifier field saves steps when using many of the linear referencing and dynamic segmentation dialog boxes and wizards in ArcMap.
