Creating keyframes of layer properties

By creating a keyframe, you make a snapshot of the properties of the object or objects the track is bound to. Through the Create Animation Keyframes dialog box in ArcMap, ArcScene, or ArcGlobe, you can create keyframes to produce an animation that alters layer properties such as transparency and visibility. You may want to reveal certain layers part of the way through your animation by either turning the top layer off in the table of contents or gradually making it transparent.

  1. Change the layer property that you want to capture.

For example, turn on the Effects toolbar and set a transparency for a layer.

  2. Click the Animation drop-down menu and click Create Keyframe.
  3. Click the Type drop-down arrow and choose Layer.
  4. Click the Source object drop-down arrow and click the layer you want to bind the track to. This is the layer you want to animate.

The track can be bound to multiple layers using the Track Properties dialog box, accessed from the Tracks tab on the Animation Manager dialog box.

  5. Click New to create a new track with a default name, or type a name for a new track in the Destination track text box and click New.
  6. Click Create to create a new keyframe for the track.
  7. Click Close.

You can repeatedly change a property and create a new keyframe without closing the Create Animation Keyframe dialog box. You need at least two keyframes to create a track that shows a change.

Tip:
  • If the Create button is unavailable, click the New button. When you type a name for a new track, you have to click New to establish it as a new track. The Create button then becomes available.
  • The properties of a keyframe can be edited using the Animation Manager.
