Accessing image service metadata

Metadata about an image service or the raster datasets within the image service can be accessed in various ways, depending on the type of data being served. Generally, you access image service metadata by right-clicking the image service layer in the table of contents and clicking Data > View Item Description.

There are only a few cases where there is a Metadata tab in the Layer Properties dialog box. This tab supports legacy image services.

Optionally, if the image service is created from a mosaic dataset, you can open the attribute table and view the metadata for the individual raster datasets within the image service. This method is described in the steps below.

  1. Right-click the image service layer in the table of contents and click Open Attribute Table.
  2. Click a row in the table under the RASTER column.

    This displays a preview button within the selected field.

  3. Click the preview button to open the viewer window.
  4. Click the Metadata tab.
