Adding ArcIMS services

  • Add an ArcIMS map service using the Add Data dialog box
  • Add an ArcIMS feature service to ArcMap using the Add Data dialog box

Legacy:
The last supported version of ArcIMS was released with ArcGIS 10.1.x.

ArcIMS server content can be used in ArcMap as map layers.

There are a couple of ways you can add ArcIMS services to your map:

  • Use the Add Data dialog box and choose an existing ArcIMS connection or make a new connection. Then add the map service to your map (these steps are outlined below).
  • Connect to ArcGIS Server in the Catalog window, select an ArcIMS map service, and drag it into your map.

Add an ArcIMS map service using the Add Data dialog box

  1. Click the Add Data button Add Data on the Standard toolbar to open the Add Data dialog box.
  2. Click the Look in arrow and choose GIS Servers. This gives you a list of servers.

If you don't see the server you want, double-click Add ArcIMS Server to connect to an ArcIMS server. For more information, see Connecting to GIS servers.

  3. Double-click the server you want to access.

This establishes the connection to the server. After connecting to an ArcIMS server, ArcIMS image services (map services) are shown on the Add Data dialog box with this icon: ArcIMS Image service or ArcMap service icon.

  4. Choose the service you want to add to your map.
  5. Click Add.

The service is added as a composite map layer.

Note:

An image service is a composite of any number of sublayers. Individual sublayers are not accessible. You cannot add them separately from the entire map service.

Add an ArcIMS feature service to ArcMap using the Add Data dialog box

  1. Click the Add Data button Add Data on the Standard toolbar to open the Add Data dialog box.
  2. Click the Look in arrow and choose GIS Servers. This gives you a list of servers you have previously used.

If you don't see the server you want, double-click Add ArcIMS Server to connect to an ArcIMS server. For more information, see Connecting to GIS servers.

  3. Double-click the server you want to access.

This establishes the connection to the server. After connecting to an ArcIMS server, feature services are shown in the Add Data dialog box with this icon: ArcIMS feature service icon.

  4. Choose the feature service you want to add, or double-click to access an individual feature service sublayer if you want to add specific sublayers.
  5. Click Add.

The service is added as a composite map layer.

Tip:

ArcIMS feature services allow you to add individual or groups of feature classes. You can select a group of sublayers to add by pressing SHIFT and clicking the first and last sublayers in the group you want to add, or you can select and add nonsequential sublayers by pressing CTRL and clicking each one. After selecting the sublayers, add them to your map.
