Creating a new abbreviation dictionary

ArcGIS Desktop is in mature support and will be retired March 1, 2026. There are no plans for future releases of ArcGIS Desktop, and it is recommended that you migrate to ArcGIS Pro. See Migrate from ArcMap to ArcGIS Pro for more information.
  1. Enable the Maplex Label Engine.
  2. On the Labeling toolbar, click Labeling > Abbreviation Dictionaries.
  3. Click New.
  4. Type a name for a new abbreviation dictionary.
  5. Click OK.

    6. You can now add words and their abbreviations to the dictionary.
