Displaying LAS Dataset points in ArcScene

Lidar data (and therefore a LAS Dataset) is simply a point-sampling of the world, and these points can be used to better understand the world they represent.

Example use cases for displaying LAS datasets as points in 3D

The list below includes common examples on how you can benefit by visualizing LAS datasets as points in a 3D viewing environment like ArcScene. You can:

• Visually compare the lidar points against your existing GIS data for data validation, such as building data.
• Interactively measure 3D distances between visible features, such as transition lines and trees.
• Use the points as backdrop data to digitize in new GIS features, such as park benches.

You add LAS datasets into ArcScene using standard techniques, such as the Add Data wizard or drag and drop from the Catalog window, and adjust the default renderer to meet your needs. When displaying LAS datasets as points, you can use any of the LAS attributes, such as classification, intensity, and RGB color to define the point symbology.
