Removing bathymetry data from the BIS geodatabase

You can remove datasets that have been registered in the Bathymetry Information System (BIS) from the BIS geodatabase. Only users with Data Owner privileges in the BIS geodatabase can remove bathymetry data. If you are working in a multiuser environment, it is strongly recommended that bathymetry data removal is performed by one user at a time. Any referenced dataset can be removed. The following are some common situations that may require datasets to be removed from the BIS:

  • The dataset was erroneously added.
  • The dataset is no longer in use or required by your organization.
  • The dataset has errors that need to be corrected before it can be added to the BIS.

Note:

Removing a bathymetry dataset from the BIS does not delete the physical data from the disk. For example, if you had previously registered a dataset named NewYork.tif with the BIS, removing it will only unregister it from the BIS, but the actual TIFF file will remain on the disk until it is manually deleted.

  1. Start ArcMap.
  2. Click Customize > Toolbars > Bathymetry on the main menu to activate the Bathymetry toolbar if necessary.
  3. Click the Explore Bathymetry button Explore Bathymetry on the Bathymetry toolbar.

The Explore Bathymetry window appears. The right side of the window lists all bathymetry datasets in the active BIS geodatabase.

  4. Click to select one or more datasets you want to remove.

    Note:

Datasets that are currently in the Compose Surface window cannot be removed.

  5. Right-click the selected dataset and click Remove from BIS to remove the dataset from the BIS.

    Tip:

If more than one dataset is selected, click Remove Selected from BIS.

    The following message appears.

  6. Click Yes to confirm that you want to remove one or more datasets.

Once the process is complete, a message appears.

    Note:

It is recommended that the Diagnose BIS tool be run after removing datasets to refresh the Bathymetry Data Index for accurate visualization of data registered with the BIS.

  7. Optionally click Save log to save a text file of the information displayed on the Remove Datasets dialog box.
